Stop Funding Me!

The Common Core is to set standards for students to reach a goal on where they are supposed to be by the end of the year. The Common Core goes to all subjects and grades, even in college, the teachers have to get students to understand the material and be able to pass them along as long as they met the standard of the grade level. Common core is a set structure of goals to have and be able to accomplish and understand them by the end of the year.

Having the Common core is a good thing in school system but also a bad thing in school systems. The reasons for this is because the Common Core is so structured to were teachers are not being able to teach to their potential because they are limited. Because of the Common Core, teachers are teaching children to take a test. “It’s not just individual teachers who oppose Common Core, but an increasing number of teachers’ unions, who were initially supportive of the standards, have come out against them after seeing the devastating effects on classrooms.” At first teachers had supported Common Core but then changed their minds due to the way children learn and how the common core is only set for equal learning when it should be set for many different learning ways. Another thing is that the Common Core was created but not by the teachers. “Common Core was not designed by teachers, but rather by bureaucrats who do not understand the classroom, and many teachers are among the loudest voices of opposition, angry at the way the standards prevent them from effectively doing their jobs.” As you can see teachers are no longer for the Common Core. Even parents, are having hard times to help their child with school homework because of the way the standards are set up.

Parents are also fighting against the Common Core because they believe that their child has a mind and needs to be expressed than being taught to take a test. Parents are complaining about the problems and how confusing it is for students to learn the steps to the math problem to solve or the perfect way to write. Parents want to sign the petition to get rid of the Common Core because the government should not be able to control our children’s minds. They should be able to set out and learn creatively.

  1. Why is the Common Core a good thing in a school system?

"As you can see teachers are no longer for the Common Core."
Well, no. I can see that your links show one of the Tea Party PACs founded by the Koch brothers has been attacking the Common Core for the past three years. As of August 2015 poll, 40% of teachers still supported it. Do you know of a more recent survey that you are basing your generalization about teacher support on?

  2. I agree with you on the fact that teachers should not be limited on how they teach and that kids should not be forced to learn in such a limited structured matter but i still think that there are certain things children need to learn before being able to move on. As a student for the past 15 years i know that sometimes i don't understand a way that teachers are trying to teach me something and I would ask my mom to help but she wouldn't be able to because she learned how to get the answer a different way, and i think it would have been helpful to be able to learn multiple ways as long as you are ultimately getting the correct answer and learning as you go. But I do believe that there are a set of standers students need to know before moving on, i mean if a student doesn't learn something and understand it then the further they go in there school career the harder it will get for them, and like you i believe that we need to help students in there learning , not hurt it.

  3. I agree that students need to learn before being able to move on but as for the common core which basically set the teachers up to set the students to basically learn how to take a test and because of this it takes up to much time away from learning the actual subjects.

    1. This is not the fault of the Common Core material. "Teaching to the test" is caused by the "No Child Left Behind" law mandating that a high stakes impromptu test be used for grade advancement. It has also ended up being used to determine teacher, principal, and school evaluations -- leading to the unintended consequence of administrators doing everything possible to convince low-performing students to drop out so as to improve their metrics.

  4. I do not have another source that is recent for a survey of teachers. I based my generalization about teachers hating the common core because I had experienced this a a lot during my job.

  5. I agree that the Common Core education standards are much to generalized. I agree that students should be able to learn and be educated in more creative ways, because every child has a different mind that learns in different ways. However, every parent on this planet thinks their child is special. They think that their child needs the best education and the most individual attention. Public education CANNOT provide that for every single student. It is PUBLIC education for a reason. Private schools, however, may have the means to do so. SAT and MCAS tests, taking cues from Common Core, are completely necessary in the path of education for the average student. I am a student that had to take both tests, and obviously hated them in the moment, but I did understand that it was necessary to take them because of the way they help colleges see each person's success in each subject. The accuracy of these tests is a different discussion. So yes I believe Common Core is somewhat necessary because of the means of the education systems in this country. But I also agree that common core education can still be used while also providing more creative ways to learn.
