Banning The Most Popular Sport?

There is a debate going on about high school football being banned until the child is an “adult” at age 18. The reason for this is because football causes too many concussions and risk on children. Children end up facing  memory loss and long term effects on the brain.

Football is a risky sport just like any other sport that children who play can have concussions.

Concussions are a result of trauma to the brain. The effects of a concussion are headaches, memory loss, balance and coordination. Some symptoms of a concussion are headaches, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.

If we take football away for a risk of concussions, then shouldn’t all sports be taken away as well?

Most students in high school play football because it is all they might have in life. It is something they grew up with and if you take away the game, you take away the person. A lot of high school players play football because it is away for them to take their anger out, pain away or just because they love the game.

Two Minnesota doctors urge football to be eliminated from schools. They believe that football is too much a risk to play because concussions are so bad and we never know how bad they will ever be. Most football athletes experience concussions between 5 to 20 percent.

“The brain is an irreplaceable organ, the health of which is foundational for the ability to learn, socialize and for fully realizing life’s physical and vocational opportunities.”

Banning football to resolve the percentage of students having a concussion from playing does not solve the problem. There should be an awareness of how dangerous football can be and find ways to prevent concussions being so serious.

I believe that every sport is dangerous to play for high school athletes. I know personally from experience and have suffered from concussions. But because my sport isn’t as popular than football does not mean for it to end. I know if I didn’t play a sport I would not know who I would be. Sports help develop who we become and if that gets taken away, there just might be more violence than what there is now.

  1. I agree with you that if football should be banned then so should every other sport, like you said with every sport comes risk. IN high school i was a swimmer and you wouldn't think you could get a concussion from that sport but during one meet a girl hit her head off the bottom of the pool and got one. If they are so serious about getting rid of football as a sport then they would need to get rid of everything else and that's not fair to students. Like you said it is who the student is, but along with that it's a way for them to make friends, be a part of team, learn how to work with others, and also keep them in shape. If we got rid of school sports i could see the childhood obesity rising even higher then it is now. Like you said they shouldn't ban football or any other sport for that matter, but instead should look into ways of making it safer. There are risk for very sport but taking away a sport can have many risks itself.

  2. Football is under fire since it is the most popular sport I will agree, but take a look at concussions from women's high school soccer and you will see rates nearly as high. You bring up several valid points about the benefits of sports. You also could of brought up the top down advances in safety in the last several years to keep all players safe.

    Citation, please.

"Most football athletes experience concussions between 5 to 20 percent."
I do not understand this sentence.

The problem with concussions in children is that scientific evidence is growing that they have a similar health impact as lead -- any amount is too much.

  4. No matter what percentage of high school football players get concussions, it doesn't mean that no other sport has just as high of a rate of concussions. I agree that football shouldn't be banned.
Now I'm NOT saying that the blame is on the players, because it is not. But when you enter to play football, you should know the risks. As with doing anything, you look at the risks of it. It's normal procedure.
Some students play football because it allows them to go to college with a scholarship, and without this talent who knows where they would be. It has allowed many smart and capable people to attend college and make a better life for themselves, and without this ability they would not be able to.
