Celebrities and Sympathy

The robbing of Kim Kardashian’s jewelry worth around 11 million dollars, is all the hype the past few days. There are many opinions being taken on this highly publicized event. One opinion that is being taken by many is that just because she is an extremely wealthy and privileged celebrity that it should not be taken as seriously as other robberies. Because this isn’t such a big loss to her because she is already so wealthy, because she has enough security to prevent it from happening to her again. It is revolting that women are taking this position simply because they don’t like her. You do not have to like someone to have sympathy for them after going through such a traumatic event.

I think that especially women should stand up for each other in almost all situations, especially when something bad happens to them. If it happened to someone less wealthy, there would be more uproar about it. The ring that was stolen from her probably meant a lot to her. One can’t really assume another person’s appreciation for what they have unless one personally knows them.

The general public has somewhat of an aloof attitude towards celebrities. There is nothing wrong with that. They don’t have much relevance, don’t do much for the average person except provide gossip, entertainment and the occasional idol for the obsessed preteens. But we have such disregard for their personal lives that it gets to be almost vicious. Take the paparazzi for example, that follow and torment celebrities every day. Everyone has a job to do and that is theirs but they take it to extreme levels. Overall, there is no way for us to relate to such public figures, but the Kim Kardashian instance gives us a snap into reality that bad things happen to everyone, even the most wealthy and out of reach.

  1. Clearly, I listen to the wrong radio stations, read the wrong blogs, and have the wrong Facebook Friends. In the two weeks since the event, this is the first I've heard of this crime.

What is your citation for the $40 million figure? A google search for "kardashian jewelry" shows figures of $11, $4, and $10 million.

Likewise, are you able to provide evidence to your claim that some women are taking a position that you find revolting?
