But what most people do not know is that marijuana does effect the brain just like any other drug. When teenagers smoke and even adults, it does go into the bloodstream and other organs. With being “high” our sense are hyphened. Marijuana also affects long term development of the brain. “the drug may reduce thinking, memory, and learning functions and affect how the brain builds connections between the areas necessary for these functions.”
There are also physical health problems with smoking marijuana. There are lack of breathing (just like a regular smoker would have), increasing heart rate, pregnancy, and mental health.
And knowing all of the problems that marijuana causes, they have legalized weed for Olympians. “many Olympians, past and present, have either been caught or acknowledged cannabis use. In most cases, Olympians are using marijuana for its medicinal value – rest, recovery, and pain management.” Ross Rebagliati had tested positive in the Olympics and almost got his gold medal award take but because this was not a rule before. Michael Phelps was next in line but caught smoking at a party. However, even though the policy has changed for Olympians, other officials feel that it does not improve their performance. “policy on marijuana is the result of a heated negotiation between those members of the committee who do not consider marijuana to be a performance enhancement drug…”
Marijuana should not be legal for Olympians because if the Olympians can do it then why not other sports in college or high school be allowed to smoke marijuana and not get in trouble for it.
I think you stick a very interesting position here. Do you smoke? Are you an athlete? I don't smoke however I am an athlete and I do use cannabis so sooth my sore muscles with the THC oil and almost got in trouble for in high school. I use the oil for my back and knees in which I have DDD and arthritis respectively. Athletes endure a massive amount of pain and soreness and I don't see anything wrong with methods that reduce that pain. Since cannabis isn't a performance enhancement drug what's the issue here?

ReplyDeleteCitation, please.
"With being “high” our sense are hyphened."
I do not understand this sentence.
"There are also physical health problems with smoking marijuana. There are lack of breathing (just like a regular smoker would have), increasing heart rate, pregnancy, and mental health."
Smoking marijuana causes pregnancy?!?
"Marijuana should not be legal for Olympians because if the Olympians can do it then why not other sports in college or high school be allowed to smoke marijuana and not get in trouble for it."
This is a logical fallacy -- a false equivalence. Olympic competition is not the same as college competition is not the same as high school competition. There are different rules for each.
"Marijuana should not be legal for Olympians because if the Olympians can do it then why not other sports in college or high school be allowed to smoke marijuana and not get in trouble for it."
ReplyDeleteIt is obvious that Olympic Sports are FAR out of the realm, not even in the same category as college or high school sports. Undoubtedly they can be extremely difficult, granted. But they are not even comparable. Olympic sports can put stress on the body and mind that a college athlete or high school athlete doesn't fully experience. Second, college and high school sports are supported by the institution they are played at- educational institutions, which I highly doubt will be supporting the use of this drug anytime soon.
It is a strongly opinionated post but you don't really provide any reasons why college and high school athletes should also be able to smoke, and isn't that your point?
