Athletes are also bringing in a lot of money to the league. We do a lot of fundraising and our events to have to show others who we are if you do not know about the sports. “March Madness is one of the most watched sporting events in the country” (Patterson). This event allows us to have activities for sports that are at the colleges and get more people interested in coming.
With getting paid for playing a college sport, athletes could use this money to pay for our loans and debt we get put in from college. Even the professionals are being screwed over in pay. “The ESPN documentary Broke gave an inside view of the financial woes of many professional athletes, noting that around 60% of NBA players are broke within five years of retirement” (Patterson). Not even college athletes but professionals are losing money. We need to seek into better investments that we can 100% trust even with college athletes. This would allow college athletes to raise the money for “financial literacy” (Patterson) and move on to being able to play professional without going broke.
While I don't agree with all your arguments, it is interesting to consider student athlete injuries from this perspective. Not all colleges and universities put the same emphasis on athletics, though, and there are already student athlete scholarships.
ReplyDeleteAlso, as someone who does not follow sports, I think I would have a better idea of the legitimacy of your statements if you gave me some idea of who this Patterson is. Linking to the same thing three times isn't really helping my understanding.
Who is this (Patterson) you keep referring to?
ReplyDeleteThe NCAA is morally corrupt, and that colleges use athletes as unpaid laborers to fundraise from alumni perverts the educational system.
Far better to have the NFL and NBA set up official farm leagues, like MLB.
I think this is an interesting topic, but I'd like to know more specifics. Mainly, how much should college athletes be paid? Minimum wage by the hour? An end-of-the-year stipend?
ReplyDeleteAlso, what makes college athletics an extra curricular activity that deserves pay as opposed to others? If football players deserved to get paid, so too should members of student government and theater organizations.
I've been thinking about this for quite some time and honestly I couldn't agree more. The amount go money schools make off there athletes when it comes to jerseys and national coverage of games is unreal. Even giving the students a small fraction of what the school makes I feel is injustice.
ReplyDelete"what makes college athletics an extra curricular activity that deserves pay as opposed to others?"
ReplyDeleteBecause other extra curricular activities do not bring in millions of dollars in revenue for the school. The money trail is:
1. Corporations
2. Advertising Agencies
3. TV networks
4. NCAA
5. Colleges and Universities
With MLB, NBA, NHL, NFL, ... step #4 is "the team" and step #5 is "the player".
